The SR-71 Mach 3 surveillance aircraft lands at a speed of nearly 200 miles per hour. It is slowed after touchdown by a 40-ft Pioneer ribbon parachute designed to withstand contact with the runway and for easy reparability. The packed parachute is carried from its stowed position near the rear of the aircraft by a special Para-Sail pilot chute. This lifting design performs the very important function of preventing contact between the main parachute pack and the runway during the process of stripping out the parachute.
