The University of Washington contracted Pioneer to produce a parachute for a sensor airdrop into the Atlantic Ocean. The sensor was dropped ahead of Hurricane Dennis in August of 1999, and produced the first ever observations of sub-surface ocean turbulence during a hurricane. The parachute was a 13 foot diameter tri-conical with a 25 fps descent rate for minimal impact at touchdown with the ocean surface.
